AZIMGANJ IS 310 YEARS OLD I was born in this tiny city called Azimganj. I love Azimganj, because of this reason I want tell the other readers that Azimganj is 310. This year (2012) Azimganj is completing 310 years of its existence. This city is one of the oldest cities of Murshidabad District. Azimganj is the main market for vegetables in the district. This "GANJ" (MARKET) was founded by the Dewan of Dhaka (East Pakistan/ Bangaldesh)in 1702. Shazada Muhammed Azimuddin was entilted Mirza Azimush-Shan(1697-1703) by his father Shah Alum Bahdur. (Shah Alum was on the throne of Delhi after the death of Aurangzeb in 1707). In 1669, Aurangzeb appointed Azimush-Shan as his viceroy of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. In 1702, Azimush-Shan was directed to Patna and transferred his headquarters there. The viceroy therefore left Dhaka amidst boons of cannon and with the glamour befitting his exalted position. After reaching Patna, he renamed the city of Patna AZIMABAD after him. Before coming to Dhaka he established a "GANJ" (MARKET) on the river Hugli and named it AZIMGANJ. So Azimganj was born in the year 1702.* * Ref: SYED MUHAMMED TAIFOOR, GLIMPSES OF OLD DHAKA(S.M.Perwez, 8 Eskaton Road, Dacca-2,1956), pp.219-226. Forwarded by Mr. A.K.
